Where we came from

BYPC was founded by a group of churches from the Braintree area, who were aware that the work of the church was often divorced from the lives of ordinary young people. They wanted to allow young people to see the Christian values of love and freedom displayed in the lives of people that they met. None of the founders were professional youth workers or experts, just hard-working, caring people of many different ages who wanted to set up a centre for any young people who wanted to come.

The first premises BYPC held was a small hut on Station Approach Braintree, hence where them name ‘The Hut’ came from. We were given this building rent free from Thorogood Plumbers, with the knowledge that it was due to be demolished to make room for flats to be built. We had no idea how long we would be there, but in the end it housed us for 2 years.

The Hut was a space for young people to come and hand out, make new friends and eat as many, many slices of toast. All washed down with hot chocolate or squash. It wasn’t a lavish building, but it was cosy. It was full of friendship, fun and laughter, and was a brilliant success! There were at least 80 young people coming through the doors on a weekly basis, and we had a good core team of volunteers.

In time, the circumstances of the leader (Glenda) of what had become known as ‘The Hut’ changed, when she moved away and the temporary premises that were being used were no longer available. Thus, the churches in the Braintree area, seeing how important the project was, took on the project. BYPC became a charity limited by guarantee in 2010, working for the benefit of young people as a Christian organisation, creating a caring and safe community in which young people are respected, valued and offered opportunities.

BYPC made use of several temporary premises, before moving into our current site in the heart of Braintree town. We have a large meeting area, toilets, shower facilities, a kitchen, and an office. We offer a safe, accepting place for young people to meet and a mixed programme of events and trips that they can join in with as they want.
